Dana Lozier is an educator, lifelong learner, and faculty member at Salish Kootenai College, where she has found a professional home and a community that reflects her passion for learning, teaching, and preparing future educators. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies, with areas of study in French, Television Communication, and Anthropology, from the University of Missouri; a Master’s degree in Education in Curriculum and Instruction from Temple University; and is a doctoral candidate, ABD, in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Montana. She also holds an endorsement in Special Education from the University of Montana.
With 26 years of teaching experience spanning birth through college, Dana has had the opportunity to teach in a remarkable variety of educational settings. Her experience includes urban Philadelphia and rural Frenchtown, Montana, as well as schools across three states and two island territories. She has worked in public, charter, private, and religious schools, giving her a broad perspective on the diverse ways children, families, teachers, and communities experience education.
Dana specializes in early childhood education and special education, with a particular interest in supporting educators as they respond to the individual strengths, needs, and experiences of young children. She is passionate about preparing future educators to enter a rapidly changing world with curiosity, flexibility, compassion, and a commitment to lifelong learning. Dana especially enjoys learning alongside others and collaborating with students as they explore what it means to be an educator in an ever-changing educational landscape.
Travel and learning abroad have played an important role in shaping Dana’s understanding of education and culture. She has lived in France and Uganda, including time living in a refugee camp where she studied the experiences of widowed refugee women from Sudan and the Central African Republic (then Zaire). Her travels have also taken her throughout South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, as well as to Indonesia, the Philippines, Korea, Japan, Italy, and England. Wherever she travels, Dana seeks opportunities to learn about local communities and explore how education is experienced and practiced in different parts of the world. These experiences continually influence her perspective as an educator and remind her of the many ways people learn, teach, and build community.
At Salish Kootenai College, Dana has found a professional community that aligns closely with her values as an educator. She describes SKC as her professional home and is grateful for the opportunity to contribute to an institution committed to serving students, communities, and future generations. She brings to her work a deep love of education, an expansive professional perspective, and a genuine enthusiasm for learning alongside others.
Beyond academia, Dana is an avid gardener, hiker, reader, and Barbershop singer. She also hopes to continue a family tradition of beekeeping, following in the footsteps of her late father. Her interests outside the classroom reflect the same curiosity and appreciation for lifelong learning that characterize her professional life.
